Certification Options by Profession

Physicians

Candidates for subspecialty certification in pediatric medicine must first be licensed in general pediatrics (allopathic or osteopathic medicine) and have completed the necessary training as outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Nurses

The Registered Nurse (RN) licensing exam is used to demonstrate general competency in the field of nursing. Once a practitioner has considerable experience caring for children as an RN, he or she may apply to become certified in a subspecialty area of pediatric nursing.

Other Pediatric Providers

Therapists, dentists, and other pediatric health care providers may also require additional certification to provide subspecialty care.

Physician Pediatric Certification Courses

Candidates for subspecialty certification in pediatric medicine must first be licensed in general pediatrics (allopathic or osteopathic medicine) and have completed the necessary training as outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Requirements for certification typically blend classroom education with inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences. This advanced training prepares physicians to provide care to children and adolescents with chronic, acute, or complex disorders beyond the scope of general pediatrics.

Alternatively, physicians who wish to combine training in pediatrics with another specialty area may engage in dual training simultaneously and complete board certification in each component. See HERE
